One of the most visited museums near Midrand in Johannesburg is the Apartheid Museum. It was built by an organisation called Akali Egoli, also known as Gold Reef City, and was opened to the public in 2001. The Museum was built by the company as a part of a governmental agreement, which served as a legal way of granting a casino licence to Gold Reef City.
The building has a unique design and structure, which all enhances the story told about the Apartheid era to both its local and international visitors. On entering the museum, excursionist are taken on an epic journey, which has been conscientiously composed by exceptional historians, curators, filmmakers and designers. Jan Smuts House
General Jan Christiaan Smuts (24 May 1870 – 11 September 1950) was a remarkable South African and British Commonwealth Statesman, military leader politician and philosopher. He led armies of South Africa during the first and also the second World War, and he was the only man to sign both of the peace treaties ending both World Wars.
It is believed, that he bought the Smuts House in Britain, which was originally constructed there, then later it was shipped to India. The building reached its final destination in 1909 at Doornkloof, where the Smuts family had lived many happy moments. Both the General and Mrs Smuts had died in this family home during the 1950’s. Many parts of the house has been preserved in its original state, as it has been used by the family back in the days. Visitors may find interesting artifact from the Smuts family, including: dozens of original family photos, sculptures, beautiful and delicate china, vintage furniture, a the Smuts’ personal library and many more. The Museum also has a few war machines exhibited from the World Wars.

Coin World Museum in Midrand
Coin World is a coin press museum, retail store and mint. It was established more than 120 years ago, and opened its door as a museum in 1996. Although a coin museum may not sound that exciting to many people, but there is a lot of history one can learn when attending their highly professional guided tour. Not to mention visiting “Paul”, one of the oldest mint presses in the world. Moreover, the South African Mint is just 10 minutes away from our guest house.

James Hall Transport Museum
The James Hall Transport Museum is located in the heart of Johannesburg and it is easily accessible via the local Hop-on Hop-off buses run by CitySightseeing.
The Museum was established by James Hall and the City of Johannesburg in 1964. There are 7 different sections packed with all the different vehicles that has been used by the forefathers of South Africa for transport over the last hundred years. This is the most remarkable and comprehensive collection of vehicles in South Africa housing 2500 items, which includes animal drawn-, steam-driven-, electric-, motor vehicles and even buses, coaches and trolley buses. Historical Sites near Midrand
The Voortrekker Monument was built in honor of the Voortrekkers who migrated on their wagons from the British controlled Cape to move more inland (to what is called South Africa today) in hope for a better living during the 1830s and 1840s. This major migration is called the ‘Great Trek’.
The construction of the Monument started on 13 July 1937, and it was introduced to the public on 16 December 1949. The building was mostly funded by the government, and was declared as a National Heritage Sight on 8 July 2011. The building is located on the Monument Hill and rests on a 40 by 40 meters foundation and has the same height. The architectural style has been influenced by French, German, Egyptian and also by the African culture. The Monument has many great features, like: the Cenotaph, the round floor opening, the 6 ton statues at the four corners, the breathtaking rooftop and interior view, the laager of 64 ox-wagons, 20.000 seater large amphitheatre, etc.
